Currently on exhibition at the Kalakuta Museum in Lagos, Nigeria, standing at an amazing height of 11 feet is what
many has dubbed the 'world's tallest drum'. Placed at an imposing view outside the mementos of late afro beat legend Fela Kuti's Kalakuta Museum in Ikeja, Lagos, it was originally unveiled at the Badagry Heritage Museum during the last black history month celebration,
as a potential museum piece.
Carved by Jonathan Remi Edward from the Femi Art Warehouse, the drum is made from wood, with image carvings in traditional art forms laced round in up to 10 layers. If accorded it's deserved due by the Guinness Book of World Records, it would be another score for African arts. According to Femi Coker the promoter of the piece, the drum pays tribute to the immense contributions of blacks and people of African descent to world's civilisation, adding that it is also a tribute to African icons such as the late Afro-beat King, Fela Kuti. While at the Kalakuta Museum, the drum will also be used by the Alagere Yoruba cultural dancers on stilt, as part of their performance. The drum will also visit different museums in Nigeria and across the continent, to celebrate African heroes.
The current record for a drum is based on its size, not height and Coker hopes that Remi's work would win the Guinness Book of World Record as the tallest drum.
